Are You Interdependent?

What is the Interdependence of a Community

“Compassion is the keen awareness of the
interdependence of all things.”
                                                                        . . . . . . . . Thomas Merton

Are You Interdependent?  You should be. To me, Life would not be worth living if you are a hermit.

Above is another great quote. When you really stop to take a minute to realize what this quote is saying, you will understand how profound this quote really is.

I see this quote as a beautiful way to describe what a Community is. When you step back from your usual hectic day; running here, going there, meeting deadlines, tending to your family and all of the other important things that need to be done; and when you actually pop your head up from your life – you will see how truly interdependent a Community is.

The day we popped our head up and found this out, was the day our home was on fire. We were right next door to our home working in our place of business when our neighbor ran in and shouted ‘CALL 911!”.

Naive me, said ‘Why??’

Right there shows a small glimpse of Community interdependence. First, our neighbor ran in to help us out. He was not concerned for his own well-being – he was concerned for our well-being. Then, there was the interdependence we experienced with us having the privilege – yes the PRIVILEGE of being able to call our 911 emergency department and have help sent to us. So many people take that privilege for granted – they just expect help to be there if they need it – or they don’t even think that they will ever need it.

From there the list of interdependence that we experienced went on and on. The Rescue Squad showed up, the next town over local fire department showed up, then the neighbors showed up. This was all so humbling. One by one they showed up with so many kind ‘gifts’ and words of encouragement. The Communities Compassion that was poured out to my family during this great time of disheartenment was so needed, and so appreciated.

Needless to say, when I read the quote above, it really spoke to me. And, hopefully, it will speak to you too so as to not take the interdependence of your Community for granted.

To me, that is what CASPER is all about:

  • Compassion – to be there before during and after emergency and disaster situations
  • Interdependence –
    • Sponsortizers helping keep these nonprofit organizations open and running properly with their donations as these non-profit organizations fundraiser
    • Community Members then supporting the Sponsortizers, which of course helps ‘buy local’ campaigns that helps these business continue to stay open and be the contribution they are to your Community

So now – I challenge you to become ‘Keenly Aware’ that you need your Community – and that they need you.
